About Circle Labs
Circle Labs is the company behind shapes.inc, a place to collaborate. We’re building multiplayer AI: shapes are collaborative assistants that take part in group conversations and do things with you and your people. Our next work includes helping groups set shared goals, delegate to specialist shapes and external agents, and follow progress through to completion. Making things, figuring things out, and sharing plans give people more reasons to spend time together.
We’re a small team in San Francisco. We use the product every day, talk to users, and work across design, engineering, and research.
About the role
Build the foundation that lets people and collaborative assistants share a conversation on shapes.inc. Working with our team in San Francisco, you will connect product engineering with the services and infrastructure behind the experience. Your work will make chats dependable across web and mobile, give assistant actions reliable execution paths and help a small team ship changes with confidence.
What you’ll do
- Develop reusable APIs for shapes and external agents to participate in shared work, with clear contracts for identity, permissions, delegation, status, and results.
- Improve real-time delivery and recovery across web and mobile, including message ordering, reconnects, refreshes and interrupted sessions.
- Make delegated and long-running work observable and recoverable, tracing requests across agent handoffs to saved results, with explicit cancellation and retry behavior.
- Find and resolve performance and reliability problems across application code, databases, queues and external services.
- Improve development, deployment and operational tooling so engineers can reproduce failures, verify changes and recover from regressions.
- Build governance into shared work: apply access rules consistently across people, agents, chats, and artifacts, and make ownership and action history clear.
What you’ll bring
- Experience building and operating services used by a live application.
- Strong programming and debugging skills across service boundaries, with practical knowledge of APIs, databases and asynchronous systems.
- Ability to reason about concurrency, partial failures, data consistency and the effect of infrastructure choices on users.
- Experience using tests, logs and metrics to investigate failures and verify production behavior.
- Clear communication and the judgment to balance useful abstractions with the needs of a small product team.
Nice to have
- Experience with real-time messaging, WebSockets or synchronizing state across clients.
- Experience supporting web and mobile applications through shared services or platform integrations.
- Familiarity with Python, TypeScript, relational databases, caches or cloud infrastructure.
Benefits
- Competitive pay and equity
- Health, dental, and vision coverage
- Access to frontier AI Engines
